And from that comes the problem that motorists (and especially motorcyclists) don’t consider cyclists to be equals. According to the Highway Code, we are all equal under the rules and under the law. Yet motorists seem to think nothing of driving and parking on cycle lanes, including stopping in the ASL unneccessarily. And how many of them are ticketed for it? None. What would help is if traffic wardens put tickets on vehicles that are parked on cycle lanes. It does not happen. It should.

Politicians like to be seen to be doing something whilst actually doing nothing much at all. The people that make the laws and those who enforce the laws are, mostly, slaves to their motorised transport. They do not care about cyclists. Not at all. They just want our votes. If the legislators cared at all about cyclists then there would be heavier penalties against motorists who kill cyclists through careless and reckless motoring.

Am I the only one who thinks cycle superhighways are great? It certainly seems so.

Mind you, blue is my favourite colour, and I don’t live in London.

I agree with E Blair – it is difficult to take this Superhighway solution serious when the solution has already been solved by other European countries. I mean, why are British politicians trying to re-invent the wheel?

@Jack; Far from causing gridlock, the cycle model in Denmark and the Netherlands improves the roads for all forms of transport and makes journeys quicker and safer for both cyclists and motorists.

@ E Blair: I think London’s Mayors (this one and the previous one) hold the view that London is just far too important a global city and international hub of finance and commerce to consider risking yet more gridlock by giving over driving space or parking space for Dutch, Danish or German-style bicycle lanes.

Having said that, have you tried riding a bicycle in Madrid or Milan? Not fun at all.

Am I the only person wondering why London has rejected the preferred bicycle solution of other European countries – namely segregated cycle paths that separate bicycles from cars and lorries?
